Why Is My Camera Showing No Signal?

A "No Signal" message means your monitor is powered on but isn't receiving a video feed from your camera. This is almost always caused by a connection, power, or compatibility issue — not a faulty monitor.

Work through the steps below in order.

Quick Check — Start Here

  • Is your vehicle in reverse? Most backup cameras only activate when the vehicle is in reverse.
  • Is the monitor powered on and set to the correct input?
  • Was this camera working before, or is it a new installation?

If this is a new camera installation, start here instead: Why Isn't My New Camera Working After Installation?

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Confirm the vehicle is in reverse

Most RVS backup cameras are triggered by the reverse signal wire and will only show an image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

  1. Put the vehicle in reverse
  2. Wait 3–5 seconds for the camera signal to come through
  3. If the image appears, the camera is working correctly

If the camera is supposed to be on constantly (not just in reverse), confirm the power wire is connected to a constant 12V source rather than the reverse trigger wire.

2. Check the monitor input

  1. Press the Input or Source button on your monitor (V1/V2 or CH)
  2. Cycle through the available inputs until you reach the camera input (usually labeled AV1, or CH1)
  3. Confirm the monitor is set to the input the camera is connected to

3. Check all cable connections

Loose connections are the most common cause of a No Signal error.

  1. Unplug and firmly reconnect the camera cable at both ends — at the camera and at the monitor
  2. Inspect the connector for:
    • Bent or pushed-back pins
    • Loose or wobbly fit
    • Dirt, moisture, or corrosion
  3. Inspect the full cable run for damage, pinch points, or sharp bends — especially near door frames, hinges, or anywhere the cable passes through metal

4. Confirm the camera is receiving power

  1. Put the vehicle in reverse and check whether the camera's IR lights activate — in low light or at night, you should see a faint red glow around the camera lens if the IR LEDs are on
  2. If there are no IR lights and no image, the camera may not be receiving power
  3. Check that the camera's power wire (usually red) is connected and the reverse trigger wire (usually blue or yellow) is connected to the vehicle's reverse light circuit

5. Test with a different cable

Long or damaged cables are a very common cause of No Signal errors.

  1. Try replacing the camera cable with a shorter or known working cable
  2. Cables running over 20–25 feet can cause signal loss, especially on CVBS systems
  3. If the image appears with a shorter cable, the original cable is likely damaged or too long for your system

6. Confirm compatibility

If you recently replaced your camera or monitor, a signal type mismatch can cause a No Signal error even when everything appears to be connected correctly.

Remember: Matching connectors does NOT mean compatibility.

Not sure what type of system you have? Go to: How to Identify Your System (AHD vs CVBS vs FHD)

7. Test with a different camera

If you have access to another camera, plug it into the same cable and monitor.

  • If the second camera works, your original camera is likely faulty
  • If the second camera also shows No Signal: the issue is with the cable, monitor input, or power — not the camera

Common Causes at a Glance

Cause How to Fix
Vehicle not in reverse Shift into reverse and wait 3–5 seconds
Wrong monitor input selected Press V1/V2 and select the camera input
Loose or unplugged cable Reseat connections at both ends
Camera not receiving power Check power and reverse trigger wire connections
Damaged or too-long cable Replace cable, keep runs under 20–25 feet
AHD/CVBS/FHD signal mismatch Confirm system type and use a compatible camera
Faulty camera Test with a known working camera
